Because the Ref 5074 was constructed as a self-winding watch its internal components had to be carefully thought out and given the utmost attention. A special 22K gold rotor was designed for the movement enabling enough energy to be supplied to the wind the movement.The overall height of the movement is only 6.9 mm and the case measures 12.3 mm as well as a widened bezel to accommodate the four coils of the two cathedral gongs. The coveted "cathedral gong" sounding minute repeating function was only previously created in a wristwatch when Patek Philippe released its prized Ref 5002 Sky Moon Minute Repeating Tourbillon model. The Ref 5074 is considered the successor of the famous Classic Patek Philippe Ref. 3974. The mechanism is the same in both references with the exception of the gong which goes twice around the watch case in the Ref 5074 in order to give a better quality and louder gong. The Ref 5074 was launched in 2002 only in yellow gold with a white or a black dial & produced in approximately 25 -30 examples. Approximately 10 pieces were produced with the white dial making this example extremely rare in the collectible watch market.Also, Patek Philippe officially discontinued this model in 2006 and is now only offering it in rose gold.
